My Lil Shamrock Wires Rivals In Mile Feature

     My Lil Shamrock, a 3-year-old filly owned by Irishman Daniel O’Neill of San Francisco, posted a front-running victory in the one-mile feature race at Golden Gate Fields Saturday.

     My Lil Shamrock was sent straight to the lead by jockey Frank Alvarado and opened up a clear advantage on the backstretch.  My Lil Shamrock had her rivals stacked up behind her entering the stretch and then spurted away in the final furlong to score by
4 1/2 lengths.

Hot Hernandez Records Riding Triple

     Jockey Juan Hernandez boosted his winning percentage at the 2012-2013 winter/spring meeting to 23.2 when he scored with three of his seven mounts Friday at Golden Gate Fields.

     Hernandez took the first race with South Forty ($7.00), the fifth with Bottle Blonde ($13.80), and the sixth with Clever Cayenne ($4.20).  Hernandez deserves extra credit for his win with South Forty as the 4-year-old gelding had failed to break his maiden in 26 previous attempts.

Sharp Lady Aspen Scores Again At Golden Gate Fields

     Lady Aspen recorded her third victory in her last four starts when she charged from off the pace to defeat even-money favorite Luscious Lonna by a half-length in the $35,972 allowance feature at Golden Gate Fields Thursday.

     Lady Aspen, who had defeated Luscious Lonna by 2 1/2 lengths in a one-mile turf race on Jan. 4, went off at an overlay price of 5-1 in Thursday’s 1 1/16-mile contest on Tapeta and paid $12.00 to win.  Jockey William Antongeorgi III rode Lady Aspen, who was timed in 1:48.56.

Stakes Mare Going For A Spin Will Go For A Spin At Golden Gate Fields

     Multiple stakes-winner Going for a Spin will go for a spin at Golden Gate Fields in Thursday’s first race, a 1 1/16-mile allowance test for fillies and mares and the main event on a seven-race program.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.

Carr Completes ‘Natural’ Riding Hat Trick With Feature Race Win

     Jockey Dennis Carr completed a “natural” riding hat trick by guiding Regulus to a wire-to-wire victory in the featured eighth race at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.

     Carr kicked off his triple in the sixth race when he piloted 11-1 outsider Barrel Knot ($24.00) to a front-running victory in a 5 1/2-furlong race for 4-year-olds and up.  Barrel Knot, owned and trained by Frances Henderson, defeated 2-1 favorite Cost of Freedom by 1 1/4 lengths.

Frey Rides A Pair Of Winners At Golden Gate Fields

     Jockey Kyle Frey rode a pair of winners Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

     Frey took the first race, a six-furlong allowance sprint for 3-year-old fillies, with Irish Presence, who overcame some traffic to win by a head over Power of Ten.  Irish Presence had to check when even-money favorite Hollanita drifted in front of her at the top of the stretch.  Irish Presence quickly regained her momentum and outran Power of Ten through the final furlong to earn her second win in seven starts.

Former Jockey And Racing Official Volzke Dies At Age 87

     Merlin Volzke, a former jockey and California racing official, died peacefully at his home in Sacramento Thursday night.  Mr. Volzke was 87.

Undefeated Fillies Will Meet Saturday At Golden Gate Fields

     Golden Gate Fields will present an eight-race card Friday and nine-race programs Saturday and Sunday.  Post time all three days is 12:45 p.m.

     The race of the weekend could be Saturday’s first race, a six-furlong allowance sprint for 3-year-old fillies that attracted the undefeated runners Miss American Pie and Hollanita.

Gallant Son Charges To Win In Albany Stakes

     The 7-year-old horse Gallant Son added a Golden Gate Fields stakes win to his stakes portfolio Monday when he charged from off the pace to post a 1 1/4-length victory in the $50,450 Albany Stakes.

     Ridden for the first time by French jockey Julien Couton, Gallant Son came from seventh in a field of nine to win the six-furlong sprint for older horses in a very impressive 1:09.18.  Moonshine Bay took second by three-quarters of a length over Shrug.

Bailouttheminister Favored In Monday’s Albany Stakes

     Bailouttheminister, who has won his last three starts at six furlongs, heads a field of nine hard-hitting sprinters in the $50,000-added Albany Stakes at Golden Gate Fields Monday.

     Post time for the special Presidents’ Day racing program is 12:45 p.m. and Golden  Gate Fields is offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers and $1 sodas.
