Zeewat Among 14 Nominated To California Derby

Fourteen 3-year-olds, including Gold Rush Stakes winner Zeewat, have been nominated to the $100,000 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields.

The California Derby is a 1 1/16-mile race that will be run Saturday, Jan. 12.  Entries and post positions for the feature will be drawn Wednesday.

Zeewat won the one-mile Gold Rush Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths on Dec. 8 for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who owns the colt in partnership with George Todaro.  The Gold Rush was the second stakes win for Zeewat, who captured the Cavonnier Juvenile at Santa Rosa last summer.

The California Derby nomination roster also includes stakes-winners Butterfly Soul (who took the Phil D. Shepherd at Fairplex Park), Fury Kapcori (Charlie Palmer Futurity at the Big Fresno Fair), and Tree of Life (Barretts Juvenile at Fairplex Park).

The following horses are nominated to the California Derby: Appealing Tale, Butterfly Soul, Condiment, Eldorado Prado, Fury Kapcori, Hear the Ghost, Imperative, Manando, My Best Bet, Shining Copper, Tree of Life, Wildcat Moon, Will True Up, and Zeewat.

The California Derby serves as a prep for the Grade 3 $200,000 El Camino Real Derby, which will be run Saturday, Feb. 16.  A 1 1/8-mile test, the El Camino Real Derby is part of the new “Road to the Kentucky Derby,” a 36-race series that awards points to the top four finishers in each race.

The top 20 point earners nominated to the Triple Crown will get a spot in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby on May 4 at Churchill Downs.  Point distribution in the El Camino Real Derby will be as follows: 10 points for first place, four for second, two for third, and one for fourth.

Martin Has Training Triple –  Trainer John F. Martin saddled three winners Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.  Martin took the second race with Lucky to Stay Home ($9.40), the fifth with Elizabeth A ($5.20), and the ninth with Incisive ($3.40).

Dollar Day Sunday –  Sunday is Dollar Day at Golden Gate Fields with the track offering fans $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers, and $1 sodas.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
