U.S. Open Hunch Plays At Golden Gate Fields Thursday As Final Week Begins

The final week of racing at Golden Gate Fields’ 2011/2012 winter-spring meeting begins Thursday with an eight-race card.  Post time is 1:15 p.m.

Closing weekend will feature an eight-race twilight card on Friday and 10-race programs on Saturday and Sunday.  Post time Friday is 3:15 p.m.  First post Saturday and Sunday is 1:15 p.m.

Thursday also marks the opening round of the U.S. Open, which is being played in San Francisco.  Golden Gate Fields offers an early Pick 4 bet – pick the winners of races one through four to cash – and fans attending the races Thursday may want to play the following “U.S. Open Hunch Play Pick 4” ticket.

Race 1:  #2 Follow The Crowd (7-to-5).  An obvious selection on the Pick 4 ticket when one thinks about the throng of golf fans that will be following the star-studded threesome of Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson Thursday.

Race 2:  #3 Golden Roar (5-to-1) and #6 Foggy Dew (4-to-1).  There figures to be many roars from the gallery during Thursday’s opening round, which will get started in misty, moist conditions.

Race 3: #5 Olympic Starter (8-to-1).  Come on, the U.S. Open starts Thursday at the Olympic Club.

Race 4: #3 Irish Coral (5-to-2) and #5 Global Glow (3-to-1).  The U.S. Open field includes the popular young golfer from Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy, and the city of San Francisco will glow during the global telecasts of this major tournament.

Lost in the Fog Stakes –  Nine 2-year-olds will battle in the final stakes of the meeting, the $50,000-added Lost in the Fog on Saturday.  The impressive maiden winners Native Treasure and Go Papi Go head the field in the five-furlong sprint.

Fan Appreciation Day –  Saturday is Fan Appreciation Day at Golden Gate Fields.  Fans attending the races with a paid admission will receive a coupon good for a free gift.  Sports bags, sweatshirts, clocks, frames, blankets and chairs are among the items that will be given away.

Closing Day is Dollar Day –  Sunday, in addition to being closing day, is Dollar Day. General parking, general admission, programs, beers, hot dogs and sodas cost just a buck a piece.  The popular band Tainted Love will perform on the Trackside Stage between races.
