Unusual Meeting Wins Three-Horse Photo On New Year’s Day

Unusual Meeting out-kicked fellow stretch-runners Bardy and El Dorado Prado in the final sixteenth of a mile to win the $35,790 New Year’s Day feature in a three-horse photo finish Wednesday at Golden Gate Fields.

Unusual Meeting, ridden by Frank Alvarado, captured the one-mile allowance race on the turf by a neck.  Bardy, with William Antongeorgi III up, took second by a nostril over El Dorado Prado and jockey Dennis Carr.

Funny How, the 6-5 favorite ridden by Russell Baze, led to the stretch but grew weary down the lane and checked in last in the field of seven.

Unusual Meeting, a 4-year-old son of Unusual Heat, collected his second win on grass in eight tries.  The second choice in the betting at 7-2, Unusual Meeting paid $9.00 after touring the Lakeside Turf Course in 1:38.37.

Owned and bred by Larry and Marianne Williams, Unusual Meeting is trained by Steve Specht.

Wednesday’s holiday program kicked off a five-day racing week at Golden Gate Fields.  Post time Thursday through Sunday is 12:45 p.m.
