Trainer Vallejo Enjoys A Double During Happy Hour On Opening Day

Trainer Genaro Vallejo celebrated Happy Hour racing at Golden Gate Fields by saddling two winners Friday afternoon as the East Bay track kicked off its summer meeting.

The 17-day summer session runs through Sunday, Sept. 16, and continues Saturday with a nine-race card that begins at 1:15 p.m.  Saturday is Family Fun Day at Golden Gate Fields with the track presenting many activities for kids, including a rock climbing wall, an obstacle course, and bounce houses.  Children are admitted free to the track and the activities will be held from noon to 4 p.m.

Vallejo, who was coming off a 1-for-11 showing at the Sonoma County Fair meeting at Santa Rosa, won the first race of the summer season with Secret Jackpot ($8.80).  Ridden by Catalino Martinez, Secret Jackpot led every step of the way in the six-furlong sprint.

The Vallejo-trained Butterfly Soul ($30.40) scored the biggest upset on opening day when she rallied to win the sixth race, a five-furlong dash for maiden 2-year-old fillies, at odds of 14-1.  Butterfly Soul ran down 8-5 favorite Emmagointofastforu in deep stretch to score by 1 1/4 lengths in an impressive career debut.

Butterfly Soul was ridden by Francisco Duran, who came right back to win the seventh race with Classic Crusader ($7.00).  Duran was the only jockey to record a riding double on opening day.
