Trainer Sherman Starts New Meet By Saddling Three Winners

Golden Gate Fields opened its 2011-2012 winter/spring meeting Monday and trainer Steve Sherman was clearly the star of the opening-day program.

Sherman saddled the winner of the first two races of the 101-day season and completed a training triple when he captured the fourth race.

Sherman took the first race, a 5 1/2-furlong dash, with Dave’s Pacemaker ($6.20), who romped home by 4 1/2 lengths.  The second race was a 1 1/16-mile turf contest and Sherman scored with Colonel Mustard ($6.80), who rallied from last to win by a nose.
The $2 Sherman Daily Double paid $24.00.

Sherman, who didn’t have a starter in the third race, won the 5 1/2-furlong fourth race with Script This ($6.20), who prevailed by 3 1/4 lengths.

While Sherman was the only trainer to win more than one race Monday, jockeys Russell Baze, Leslie Mawing and Juan Hernandez all won a pair of races.

Baze guided Dave’s Pacemaker to his victory and also tallied with Oh Frankie Oh ($4.40) in the third race.  Mawing piloted Colonel Mustard to his win and also scored with Hard Slider ($10.80) in the fifth race.   Hernandez won the final two races on the card, taking the eighth with Renzo Sean ($16.20) and the ninth with General Rule ($3.00).  The $2 Hernandez Daily Double returned $21.60.

Holiday week racing at Golden Gate Fields will resume Thursday and continue through Monday, Jan. 2.  Post time is 12:45 p.m. each day.
