Trainer Callaghan, Jockey Hernandez Team Up For Pair Of Wins

Southern California-based trainer Simon Callaghan ran a pair of British-bred fillies in turf races at Golden Gate Fields Sunday, much to the delight of Bay Area jockey Juan Hernandez.

Callaghan gave Hernandez the riding assignment on both of his shippers and the talented jockey came through with flying colors.

In the sixth race, a one-mile test for maiden fillies and mares, Hernandez guided Zeva to a 1 1/4-length victory over 3-5 favorite Indygo F M A and jockey Russell Baze.  Zeva, a 3-year-old filly making her U.S. debut, paid $10.60 as the second choice in the betting.

In the featured eighth race, a 1 1/16-mile event for fillies and mares, Hernandez rallied Upward Spiral from last to first.  A 3-year-old filly, Upward Spiral paid $9.20 after defeating front-running Demonsterous by 2 1/4 lengths and earning her first win in the U.S. in five starts.

Golden Gate Fields will present the final three days of its summer meeting next Friday through Sunday.  Post time is 1:15 p.m. each day.
