Summer Hit Slight Favorite In All American Stakes

Summer Hit Slight Favorite In All American Stakes

The up and coming 4-year-old gelding Summer Hit and the classy 8-year-old gelding Tres Borrachos are the top two choices on the morning line in Monday’s $100,000 All American Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

Summer Hit is the 9-5 favorite and Tres Borrachos the 2-1 second choice in the
Grade 3 All American, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up.  The All American is the seventh race on a nine-race Memorial Day program and will be run at approximately 3:45 p.m.

First post is 12:45 p.m. and fans attending the holiday races will receive a free Golden Gate Fields lawn chair.

Eight runners are entered in the All American and the lineup is a strong one.  The field includes multiple stakes-winners Tres Borrachos, Hudson Landing, Positive Response, Control Seeker and Ashtar, as well as stakes-winning Summer Hit.  Allowance winners Siberian Laughter and Administer round out the field.

Summer Hit, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, has finished in the money in all 10 of his races and is coming off a strong runner-up finish in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on April 27.  Despite being pressured into setting fast fractions, Summer Hit battled gamely to the wire and came up just a neck short to stretch-running favorite Tigah.

Winner of the Silky Sullivan Stakes on the Golden Gate Fields turf last year, Summer Hit is 3-for-4 on Tapeta, the synthetic surface on which the All American will be decided.

Tres Borrachos is a millionaire, having banked $1,029,723 in 46 trips to the starting gate.  Tres Borrachos won the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park in 2008, finished second in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup in 2009, and captured the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar in 2011.

The well-traveled Tres Borrachos – the veteran has competed at 12 different racetracks and in seven states – enters the All American having earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure in each of his last two races at Santa Anita.

The All American field, in post position order with riders and morning-line odds, is as follows: Tres Borrachos, Joey Steiner, 2-1; Siberian Laughter, Julien Couton, 15-1; Ashtar, Christian Santiago Reyes, 20-1; Summer Hit, Russell Baze, 9-5; Administer, Alejandro Gomez, 15-1; Hudson Landing, Juan Hernandez, 8-1; Control Seeker, Francisco Duran, 8-1; and Positive Response, Dennis Carr, 5-1.  All of the starters will carry 122 pounds.

Positive Response won the 2011 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields and has earned $320,333 while claiming victory in seven of his 21 career starts.  Hudson Landing is the defending All American champion and has been victorious in 12 of his 39 races while earning $487,648.  Control Seeker won a pair of stakes on the summer fair circuit last year before running second, beaten a nose by Hudson Landing, in the All American.

Ashtar, a Group 1 stakes-winner in his native Chile in 2011, hopes to earn his first U.S. stakes victory in the All American.  Siberian Laughter and Administer ran one-two, separated by a neck, in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race on the turf on April 26 at Golden Gate Fields.

Hernandez Rides Three Winners  --  Jockey Juan Hernandez had a riding hat trick Sunday.  Hernandez won the second race with Firmly ($4.40), the fourth with Texit ($19.40), and the seventh with Downtown C. T. ($5.40).
