Summer Hit Installed As Favorite In $100,000 Berkeley Handicap

Golden Gate Fields odds maker Steve Martinelli has made Summer Hit the 8-5 morning line favorite in the Grade 3 $100,000 Berkeley Handicap, which will be run Friday at the East Bay racetrack.

Considering Summer Hit’s record at Golden Gate Fields, it’s no surprise the
4-year-old gelding is favored over five foes in the 1 1/16-mile contest for 3-year-olds and up.

Summer Hit has five wins and two seconds in seven starts at Golden Gate Fields.  One of the losses occurred when he was beaten a neck in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile in April.  Summer Hit followed up the runner-up finish with a front-running victory in the Grade 3 All American Stakes in May.

Summer Hit made five starts at Golden Gate Fields in 2012.  The California-bred son of Bertrando made his debut in a modest $12,500 maiden claiming race and rambled to a nine-length victory.  Summer Hit was claimed out of the race by trainer Candelario Villiamar.

Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer immediately contacted Villimar regarding Summer Hit and purchased the horse privately.  After finishing second in his first start for Hollendorfer, Summer Hit won a pair of starter allowance races at Golden Gate Fields before going on to capture the Silky Sullivan Stakes on the turf.

Summer Hit, who has earned $172,347 in his seven starts at Golden Gate Fields, enters the Berkeley with career earnings of $357,505.  Owned in partnership by Hollendorfer and John Carver, Summer Hit has eight wins (three stakes tallies), two seconds and two thirds in 14 lifetime starts.

Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze, who has four wins and two seconds in six tries with Summer Hit, will be aboard the horse again in the Berkeley.  Summer Hit will carry highweight of 123 pounds and break from post position five.

The field for the Berkeley Handicap, in post position order with riders, weight assignments and morning-line odds, is as follows: Fire With Fire, Juan Hernandez, 119, 6-1; Teaks North, Dennis Carr, 121, 4-1; Stryker Phd, Isaias Enriquez, 116, 10-1; Administer, Leslie Mawing, 116, 8-1; Summer Hit, Baze, 123, 8-5; and Majestic City, Jose Valdivia, Jr., 119, 2-1.

Early Post Thanksgiving Day – Racing will resume at Golden Gate Fields Thursday, Thanksgiving Day.  There is a special early post time of 11:15 a.m. for the holiday card so fans can enjoy some racing and still get home in time for the turkey dinner.
