Special Summer Improves To 3-For-3 With Game Victory

Special Summer dug in tenaciously down the stretch to hold off three rivals and win the $31,533 sprint feature by a neck Sunday at Golden Gate Fields.

Special Summer battled on the lead with Broken Sword throughout the six-furlong allowance race for 3-year-old fillies and turned back late challenges from Kitty Marie and an unlucky Power of Ten to improve her record to 3-for-3.

Special Summer, trained by Tim McCanna and ridden by Dennis Carr, was timed in 1:11.78 and paid $11.40 as the second wagering choice in a field of six.  Kitty Marie took second by a nose over 3-5 favorite Broken Sword, who finished a half-length in front of Power of Ten.  Power of Ten was trapped behind the leaders for most of the stretch run.

A Washington-bred filly by Free At Last, Special Summer is owned by her breeders, Billie Klokstad and Helen Sherry.

Jockey Julien Couton sustained a bruised right hip in the seventh race when his mount, La Pearla, crashed through the moveable inside rail on the turf course just after turning into the stretch with a big lead.  La Pearla romped around the infield after the incident and appeared to be uninjured.

Racing resumes at Golden Gate Fields Thursday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
