Specht And Alvarado Take Road Trip To Santa Anita For Sunshine Millions California Cup Day

Steve Specht and Frank Alvarado, a potent trainer-jockey combination in Northern California for many years, take their act on the road Saturday to compete in the Sunshine Millions California Cup Day program at Santa Anita.

Alvarado will ride the following Specht-trained runners: Marks Mine (9-2 on the morning line) in the $125,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint; Alasharchy (6-1) in the $200,000 California Cup Oaks; and Unusual Meeting (20-1) in the $250,000 California Cup Turf Classic.

Although none of their horses are favored on the morning line, that won’t deter Specht or Alvarado.  After all, they teamed up to score one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Sunshine Millions in 2007 when they won the Sunshine Millions Classic – which had a purse of $1 million at the time – with 33-1 long shot McCann’s Mojave, who paid $69.80 to win.

Golden Gate Fields will simulcast the entire card from Santa Anita, which will present six stakes – the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Monica, the $125,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf, the $200,000 California Cup Oaks, the $125,000 California Cup Sprint, the $250,000 California Cup Turf Classic, and the $250,000 California Cup Derby.

In addition to Specht’s trio, six other Northern California-based horses will compete in the Sunshine Millions California Cup.  They are: Summer Hit (trained by Jerry Hollendorfer) and Hittheroadrunning (Ed Moger, Jr.) in the Turf Classic; Runfasterelse (Aggie Ordonez) and Sudden Sunday (Steve Miyadi) in the Filly and Mare Turf Sprint; and Ourwestcoastghost (D. Wayne Baker) and Coach Bob (Reina Gonzalez) in the Sprint.

Post time at Santa Anita is noon.  Golden Gate Fields will present a nine-race card of its own and post time for the first local race is 12:45 p.m.
