Solar Tex Seeks Fourth Straight Win Saturday
Solar Tex will gun for his fourth straight victory Saturday at Golden Gate Fields when he meets four tough opponents in the $31,000 sprint feature.
The six-furlong allowance dash for 3-year-olds and up is the third race on a nine-race program that begins at 12:45 p.m. The local card will be enhanced by the simulcast of two major Kentucky Derby preps – the $1 million Florida Derby from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach and the $1 million Louisiana Derby from Fair Grounds in New Orleans.
Solar Tex is a 4-year-old gelding by Tribal Rule who is owned by his breeder, Eric S. Jensen. The California-bred is 3-for-3 this year with all of the victories being recorded at six furlongs. Solar Tex won a starter allowance race on Jan. 11 and allowance events on Feb. 15 and March 8.
Solar Tex is trained by Steve Fisher and will be ridden by Frank Alvarado, who was aboard for the most recent win. Victorious in five of his 12 career starts, Solar Tex is the 2-1 second choice on the morning line.
The 9-5 favorite is Zehner’s Zenna, a 7-year-old gelding who easily tops the field in earnings with a bankroll of $200,056. Owned by Stewball Stable and trained by Valerie Rhoden, Zehner’s Zenna finished third (beaten a neck for the win) in his most recent race despite hopping at the start.
The field for Saturday’s main event, in post position order, is as follows: Zehner’s Zenna, Alejandro Gomez rides, 9-5; Grumpy Small Mouth, Silvio Amador, 8-1; Brass and Gold, Dennis Carr, 6-1; Solar Tex, Alvarado, 2-1; and Streamside, Isaias Enriquez, 3-1.
