Smiling Tiger Has Easy Breeze
Smiling Tiger, working for just the second time since his third-place finish in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint, breezed an easy five furlongs in 1:01 2/5 handily Sunday morning at Golden Gate Fields.
Trained by Jeff Bonde and owned in partnership by Philip Lebherz and Alan Klein, Smiling Tiger finished only 1 3/4 lengths behind winner Big Drama in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6. Smiling Tiger missed second by a neck to Hamazing Destiny but still earned a nice payday – $198,000 – for his show performance.
“When he got back from Kentucky we took him to Pleasanton and gave him a little break and let him graze,” said Bonde. “He’s had two easy works now and he’s doing good. We’re pointing him for the Malibu Stakes.”
The $250,000 Malibu Stakes is a Grade 1 race for 3-year-olds that will be contested at seven furlongs on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita.
Smiling Tiger, who worked a half-mile at Pleasanton in :49 4/5 handily on a track rated “good” on Nov. 28, has five wins and five thirds in 10 career starts and $717,864 in earnings.
