Slim Pickins Scores By A Head In Turf Feature At Golden Gate Fields
Slim Pickins, scratched from Friday’s $100,000 All American Stakes by trainer Keith Nations, charged down the middle of the Golden Gate Fields turf course to win Saturday’s $33,540 allowance feature by a head.
Nations felt Slim Pickins fit better in Saturday’s main event than the All American and his decision to skip the Grade 3 stakes paid off when Slim Pickins prevailed in a photo finish over Siberian Laughter. Native Thunder finished third.
Slim Pickins’ victory had to lift the spirits of Nations, who came within a nose of winning the All American with his 6-year-old gelding Control Seeker, who was nailed on the wire by Hudson Landing.
Slim Pickins went off as an even-money favorite under jockey Russell Baze and paid $4.00 after recording his second straight victory on the Lakeside Turf Course. Slim Pickins completed a mile in 1:37.92 and earned $18,000 for his owner, Ken Miles.
Holiday weekend racing at Golden Gate Fields concludes Sunday with a nine-race program. Post time is 12:45 p.m. and the track is offering fans $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers, and $1 sodas. The track will also show all the NFL games on monitors throughout the facility via the Sunday Ticket.
