Sideline-Bound Hernandez Wins Four Races On Opening Day

Jockey Juan Hernandez earned some money for a forced vacation that begins Friday by riding four winners on Thursday’s opening-day program of the 2013-2014 Golden Gate Fields winter/spring racing season.

Hernandez received a seven-day riding suspension (to be served Dec. 27-29 and Jan. 1-4) from the board of stewards for causing interference in the stretch aboard Mark a Star in the second race on Dec. 13.  The infraction resulted in Mark a Star being disqualified from second and placed fourth.

Hernandez, who tied for second in the jockey standings at the 2013 fall meeting that concluded Dec. 15, returned from the 10-day holiday break with a vengeance, winning four of the first six races Thursday.

Hernandez took the opener with Lil Angelina ($7.00), the third race with Defying Logic ($26.00), the fourth with God Of War ($7.60), and the sixth with Frank and Go ($7.00).

Hernandez, who is allowed to get on horses for morning workouts during his suspension, will be able to get back in the saddle for afternoon competition on Sunday, Jan. 5.

Golden Gate Fields will present 101 days of racing during the winter/spring meeting, which runs through June 15.  Post time for Friday’s eight-race card is 12:45 p.m.

Fans attending the races Saturday will receive a free 2014 Golden Gate Fields wall calendar.  Gates open at 10 a.m. and first post is 12:45 p.m.

Sunday is Dollar Day at Golden Gate Fields with the track offering patrons $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers, and $1 sodas.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
