Shudacudawudya Edges Cardiffbythesea In Family Feud

In horse racing’s version of The Family Feud, Shudacudawudya edged his promising stablemate, Cardiffbythesea, by a half-length in the $40,382 allowance feature at Golden Gate Fields Monday.

Shudacudawudya and Cardiffbythesea are both trained by Lloyd Mason, who owns Cardiffbythesea and conditions Shudacudawudya for his son, Brett, a horse owner and farrier.  Brett’s Shudacudawudya handed Lloyd’s Cardiffbythesea his first lost as the 4-year-old gelding went into the race 3-for-3.

Shudacudawudya overhauled Cardiffbythesea in deep stretch and won the six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up in a quick 1:09.81.  Longview Drive finished third, 1 1/4 lengths behind Cardiffbythesea.

Shudacudawudya was coming off a victory in the Jess Jackson Owners’ Handicap at Santa Rosa and was the even-money favorite in the Labor Day feature.  Shudacudawudya paid $4.00 after collecting his ninth victory in 18 starts.

Shudacudawudya, a 5-year-old gelding by Marino Marini, was bred in California by Brett Mason.  A multiple stakes-winner, Shudacudawudya earned $26,760 Monday and has made $314,569 in his 18 trips to the starting gate.

Racing will resume at Golden Gate Fields Wednesday.  Post time is 1:15 p.m. and Golden Gate Fields will simulcast the closing-day program of the 2012 Del Mar meeting. Post time at Del Mar is 2 p.m.
