Sherman Saddles Three Winners On Opening Day

Sherman Saddles Three Winners On Opening Day

Steve Sherman, who tied for second in the trainer standings at Golden Gate Fields’ summer meeting with nine victories, saddled three winners Thursday when the track opened its 36-day fall season.

Sherman won the first race of the meeting with Cherry On the Cake ($2.60), the fifth race with Bardy ($4.80), and the seventh and final race with Golden Mexico ($4.40).  All three horses were favored in the betting.

Sherman sent out the exacta in the fifth race as Bardy defeated stablemate Trice Up by a neck in the one mile turf race.  The Sherman exacta returned $8.10 for a buck.

Apprentice Ricardo Gonzalez and journeyman jockey William Antongeorgi III both celebrated opening day with riding doubles.

Gonzalez, who finished third in the rider standings at the recent Big Fresno Fair meeting, guided Cherry On the Cake to victory in the first race and scored a come-from-behind win with 3-5 favorite Tizfit ($3.40) in the fourth race.

Antongeorgi scored his victories with Silver Mojave ($6.60) in the third race and Bardy in the fifth.

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Friday with an eight-race program.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
