Sharp Lady Aspen Scores Again At Golden Gate Fields

Lady Aspen recorded her third victory in her last four starts when she charged from off the pace to defeat even-money favorite Luscious Lonna by a half-length in the $35,972 allowance feature at Golden Gate Fields Thursday.

Lady Aspen, who had defeated Luscious Lonna by 2 1/2 lengths in a one-mile turf race on Jan. 4, went off at an overlay price of 5-1 in Thursday’s 1 1/16-mile contest on Tapeta and paid $12.00 to win.  Jockey William Antongeorgi III rode Lady Aspen, who was timed in 1:48.56.

Luscious Lonna, whose only loss in her previous five races was to Lady Aspen, set the pace under jockey Alejandro Gomez and fought on gamely to the wire to take second by a head over Koby Jo and jockey Inoel Beato.

Going for a Spin, a four-time stakes winner ridden by Russell Baze, finished last in the field of four as the 7-5 second choice in the betting.  Lady Aspen and Going for a Spin are both trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.

Lady Aspen has thrived since arriving at Golden Gate Fields last fall.  A 5-year-old mare by Grand Reward, Lady Aspen has two wins and a second in three starts on the track’s synthetic Tapeta surface and is 1-for-1 on the local turf course.

Lady Aspen, owned by PRO Thoroughbred Enterprises, has five wins in 18 career starts and $165,066 in earnings.

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Friday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
