SF Mile Winners Meet On Turf Friday At Golden Gate Fields
San Francisco Mile champions Our Nautique and Bold Chieftain will meet Friday at Golden Gate Fields in the featured third race, a one-mile allowance contest on the Lakeside Turf Course.
First post Friday is 12:45 p.m., and post time for the third race is 1:45 p.m. Our Nautique, the 2011 SF Mile winner, and Bold Chieftain, the 2010 SF Mile victor, head a strong field of five in the main event.
Our Nautique led every step of the way in winning the Grade 3 SF Mile on April 30 and has since added a victory in the Joseph T. Grace Handicap at Santa Rosa to his portfolio. Our Nautique won the Grace, a 1 1/16-mile turf event, by two lengths over Bold Chieftain.
Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer trains Our Nautique, a 6-year-old gelding who has won eight of his 27 career starts and $225,640.
Bold Chieftain, who has 13 career stakes wins, earned his first graded stakes victory on April 24, 2010, when he ran down the speedy Monterey Jazz to win the SF Mile – then a Grade 2 event – by a half-length. Bold Chieftain is winless in seven starts since his SF Mile score, however, the veteran finished second in five of those races.
Bold Chieftain finished fourth, beaten 3 1/4 lengths by Our Nautique, in this year’s SF Mile. Trained by William J. Morey, Jr., Bold Chiefain is an 8-year-old horse who has finished first or second in 28 of his 43 career starts. The Californi-bred has earned $1,604,491.
A trio of 4-year-olds – Goggles McCoy, Posse Power and Honour the Deputy – will join Our Nautique and Bold Chieftain in Friday’s feature. Goggles McCoy is a lightly-raced but talented gelding who has six wins in 10 starts. Posse Power is a stakes-winning colt who most recently finished third in the Grade 3 Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs. Honour the Deputy, another entrant from the Hollendorfer barn, finished second in the Grade 3 Tokyo City Stakes at Santa Anita in March.
The field for Friday’s headliner, in post position order, is as follows: Our Nautique, Kevin Krigger rides at 123 pounds; Goggles McCoy, Abel Cedillo, 118; Posse Power, Frank Alvarado, 118; Honour the Deputy, Juan Hernandez, 118; and Bold Chieftain, Russell Baze, 118.
Bevy Of Riding Suspensions -- Jockeys Kevin Krigger, William Antongeorgi III, and Inoel Beato have all been handed suspensions by the stewards at Golden Gate Field for causing interference in the stretch.
Krigger received a pair of three-day riding suspensions and will be benched Saturday and Sunday as well as Sept. 23, 24, 25 and 30. Krigger was flagged for his rides on Forty Cts in the fifth race on Sept. 5 and Pali Chief in the fourth race on Sept. 9.
Antongeorgi and Beato both received three-day suspensions that will sideline them Sunday as well as Sept. 23 and 24. Antongeorgi was penalized for his ride on Crazy Thinking in the eighth race on Sept. 9, and Beato was cited for his ride on Savanna Wild Cat in the fourth race on Sept. 10.
