Russian Greek Among 11 Nominees To $100,000 California Derby

Gold Rush Stakes winner Russian Greek is among the 11 horses nominated to the $100,000 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields.

The California Derby, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds, will be run Saturday,
Jan. 14.  The race serves as a steppingstone to the Grade 3 $200,000 El Camino Real Derby, a 1 1/8-mile contest that will be run Feb. 18.

Russian Greek stumbled at the start of the Gold Rush and then rallied from last to win the one-mile race by a neck over Marshal Marini.  It was the second victory in three career starts for Russian Greek, a Kentucky-bred son of Giant’s Causeway.

Russian Greek is trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer and owned by Olympia Star, Inc.

The following runners are nominated to the California Derby: Blacky the Bull, Cahill Chrome, Candy’s Jewel, Hodge, Longview Drive, Our Boy Benjamin, Reconstruction, Russian Greek, Senor Rain, Taylors Deal, and Unveiled Heat.

Entries for the California Derby will be taken on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
