Ruby Pumps Scores Upset On Turf

Ruby Pumps, the fourth wagering choice in a field of five, scored the upset in the $34,612 turf feature at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.

Ruby Pumps defeated fellow outsider Cathy’s Crunches by three-quarters of a length in the 1 1/16-mile allowance race for fillies and mares.  Plaza de Indias finished third, a neck behind Cathy’s Crunches.

Sister Kate, the heavy 3-5 favorite, and Freedom Reigns, the 5-2 second choice, finished fourth and last, respectively.

Ruby Pumps, dismissed in the wagering at 7-1, paid $17.60 and teamed with 9-1 Cathy’s Crunches for an exacta that returned $43.00 for $1.  Ruby Pumps clocked a time of 1:44.53 while improving to 4-for-5 on the Golden Gate Fields turf course.

Ruby Pumps, trained by Tim McCanna, is a lightly-raced but very consistent
5-year-old mare who has five wins and five seconds in 10 career starts.  Owned and bred by Russell and Lois Bennett, Ruby Pumps is a Canadian-bred daughter of Finality.

Jockey Russell Baze, who won three races Saturday, including the $100,000 Campanile Stakes with Unusual Way, came back with another riding hat trick Sunday.
Baze took the fourth race with Pahiatua ($4.80), the sixth with El Sabios ($4.60), and the seventh with Valentine’s Babe ($5.80).
