Riding Veterans Baze, Schvaneveldt Combine to Win Five Races at GGF

Russell Baze and Chad Schvaneveldt, the deans of the Northern California jockey colony, combined to win five of the nine races run at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.

     Baze, 52, had a riding hat trick while Schvaneveldt, 46, recorded a riding double. 

     A member of thoroughbred racing’s Hall of Fame, Baze won the fifth race with Musicmaestroplease ($4.60), the sixth with Snowflake Obsidian ($3.00) and the eighth with Waltzing Swan ($6.00).  Baze is the leading jockey at Golden Gate Fields with 20 victories through 10 days of racing at the summer meeting.

     Schvaneveldt, third in the rider standings with 11 victories, swept the early Daily Double.  Schvaneveldt won the first race with Buck’s Bro ($6.20) and the second with Ballet Ribbons ($6.80).  The $2 Schvaneveldt Daily Double paid $25.20.

     Golden Gate Fields will present a special Labor Day racing card Monday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m. and fans attending the holiday program will receive a free picnic blanket.  The track will also a “Family Day” celebration that will feature many will free activities for kids (pony rides, bounce houses, face painting and more) and live music by Busta Groove.
