Red Rachel Extends California Winning Streak

Red Rachel Extends California Winning Streak

Red Rachel kept her California racing record perfect with an impressive victory in the $29,906 sprint feature at Golden Gate Fields Friday evening.

Since finishing second in her career debut in Arizona last year, Red Rachel has won three straight races while racing at three different tracks in the Golden State and on three different racing surfaces.

Red Rachel began her winning streak Jan. 6 at Santa Anita when she broke her maiden in a 6 1/2-furlong race on the dirt main track.  She was claimed for $30,000 that day by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer on behalf of his wife, Janet, and longtime client George Todaro.

Red Rachel didn’t make her first start for Hollendorfer until July 27 but it was worth the wait as she crushed six rivals in a five-furlong turf dash at Santa Rosa.  Red Rachel won the $40,000 starter allowance race by six lengths under jockey Russell Baze.

Baze was back aboard Red Rachel Friday when the 3-year-old filly made her first start on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic Tapeta racing surface in a six-furlong allowance race.
Red Rachel came from off the pace to take command inside the eighth pole and pull away for a 2 1/2-length victory in 1:10.40.

Special Summer took second by 1 1/2 lengths over Zipping My Way, who finished threee-quarters of a length in front of 8-5 favorite Papercoversrock.

Red Rachel was the 5-2 second choice in the wagering and paid $7.20.  She earned $17,400 and has made $27,950 in her two starts for Hollendorfer.

Summer racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Saturday and Sunday.  Post time both days is 1:15 p.m.
