Racing Week Begins With $40,009 Pick Six Carryover

The racing week at Golden Gate Fields begins Thursday with an attractive carryover of $40,009 in the Pick Six.

Post time for the seven-race program is 12:45 p.m. and the Pick Six will be held on races two through seven.  Post time for the second race is 1:15 p.m.

The 5-year-old mare Elaine’s Tenacity made sure there would be a carryover Thursday when she captured the fifth race last Sunday at odds of 33-1.  Elaine’s Tenacity had been well beaten in her previous nine races and hadn’t reached the winner’s circle since New Year’s Eve 2012.

Elaine’s Tenacity ended her victory drought in dramatic fashion, rallying from last to win the one-mile race for $4,000 claimers by a neck.  Ridden by Diego Sanchez, Elaine’s Tenacity paid $69.60 to win.

The Pick Six is a $2 wager in which handicappers try to select the winner in six consecutive races.  Golden Gate Fields conducts the bet on its final six races each day.

Thursday’s card was expected to feature the return of turf racing, however, the recent rains may force track officials to move the two races scheduled for the turf (the fifth and seventh events) to the synthetic all-weather Tapeta surface.  Track officials will make their decision Thursday morning.

Fans attending Golden Gate Fields Saturday can watch and wager on two $1 million Kentucky Derby preps – the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct and the Santa Anita Derby.  Both races are 1 1/8-mile contests that award the winner 100 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby.

Social Inclusion, who has won his only two starts in dominating fashion by a combined margin of 17 1/2 lengths, is the 2-1 morning line favorite in the Wood Memorial.  California Chrome, who romped home by 7 1/2 lengths in the San Felipe Stakes on March 8, is the 6-5 favorite in the Santa Anita Derby.
