Purse For 2011 SF Mile Will Be $100,000
Golden Gate Fields has announced that the purse for the San Francisco Mile, which will be run Saturday, April 30, has been reduced from $150,000 to $100,000.
The San Francisco Mile had a purse of $150,000 in 2010 when it was run as a Grade 2 stakes. The race was downgraded to Grade 3 status for 2011 by the American Graded Stakes Committee.
“The purse reduction is a reflection of the Graded Stakes Committee’s downgrading of the San Francisco Mile from a Grade 2 to a Grade 3,” said Robert Hartman, general manager of Golden Gate Fields. “The minimum purse for a Grade 2 stakes is $150,000 while the minimum purse for a Grade 3 is $100,000. It’s been our policy to have purses that correspond to a race’s grade. If the San Francisco Mile had remained a Grade 2, the purse would have remained at $150,000. If the race had been upgraded to a Grade 1, the purse would have been increased.”
Nominations for the San Francisco Mile, the Bay Area’s top turf race, close Thursday, April 21. The field for the race will be drawn on Wednesday, April 27.
