Promising Colt Nonios Improves To 2-For-2
The promising colt Nonios improved his record to 2-for-2 with an authoritative victory in the $32,340 allowance feature at Golden Gate Fields Saturday.
Nonios, a Kentucky-bred son of Pleasantly Perfect, charged from last in a field of five to win the one-mile test for 3-year-olds by six lengths in 1:37.43. Diamond of Blue, the 8-to-5 favorite, finished a distant third.
Nonios made a powerful move on the far turn and swooped to the lead at the top of the stretch. With jockey Russell Baze urging him along, Nonios opened up a three-length lead in midstretch and continued to lengthen his advantage through the final furlong.
Nonios made his career debut Feb. 11 and looked impressive winning a six-furlong maiden allowance race by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:10.43. Nonios was the 8-to-5 second choice in the betting Saturday and paid $5.40.
Nonios is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned by Green Smith.
Baze had a riding triple Saturday. In addition to winning the second race with Nonios, Baze took the seventh with My T Quick ($3.40) and the ninth with The Roan Ranger ($4.40).
Trainer John F. Martin also won three races Saturday. Martin swept the final three races on the card, taking the seventh with My T Quick, the eighth with Gutshot Straight ($8.60) and the ninth with The Roan Ranger.
Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Sunday with a nine-race Dollar Day card. Post time is 12:45 p.m. and the track is offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers, and $1 sodas.
$100,000 Horseshoe Pitch -- Golden Gate Fields announced that some lucky fans attending the races on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, will have the opportunity to participate in a $100,000 horseshoe pitch.
Fans will receive a contest entry slip upon entering the racetrack and a raffle will be held to determine which 10 patrons get to pitch a horseshoe for $100,000. The first person to toss a ringer will receive the jackpot. In the event no one tosses a ringer, the person coming closest will receive a Golden Gate Fields turf club package for four.
Golden Gate Fields will also be serving up green beers on St. Patrick’s Day.
