Positive Response Has Drill For El Camino Real Derby

California Derby winner Positive Response continued his preparation for the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby by working a half-mile in :48 2/5 handily Sunday at Golden Gate Fields.

The Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby will be run Saturday, Feb. 12, and is Northern California’s steppingstone race to the Triple Crown events.

Jockey Julien Couton was aboard for Positive Response’s workout, a drill that satisfied trainer William E. Morey.

“He just went an easy half-mile today,” said Morey.  “He remains sharp and is doing really good.  He’ll have one more work before the El Camino Real Derby.  He’ll work next Sunday (Feb. 6), probably five-eighths of a mile.  That work will obviously be very important.”

Positive Response, the Bay Area’s leading 3-year-old, captured the one-mile Gold Rush Stakes before claiming the 1 1/16-mile California Derby.   The El Camino Real Derby is a 1 1/8-mile contest.

Positive Response, a gelded son of Pomeroy, has four wins and a third in six career starts.  Morey owns Positive Response in partnership Ray Pagano, Roger Newman, and Saul Gevertz.
