Positive Response Gets Positive Result In Rolling Green Stakes
Positive Response, enjoying a perfect trip under jockey Russell Baze, posted a one-length victory in the $53,600 Rolling Green Stakes at Golden Gate Fields Monday.
Positive Response raced right outside of pacesetter Hudson Landing, who was allowed to gallop through slow fractions of :50.00 for the opening-half mile and 1:14.40 for the first three-quarters of a mile in the 1 1/16-mile turf race.
Positive Response took the lead from Hudson Landing in midstretch and then held off a late bid from Tribal Tribute to collect his fifth career stakes victory for trainer William E. Morey and the ownership group of Morey, Ray Pagano, Roger Newman and Saul Gevertz.
“He is the best horse I’ve ever had,” said Morey. “He’s won on turf, dirt, synthetic and with a number of jockeys.”
Baze has ridden Positive Response four times and has two wins and two second-place finishes with the 5-year-old gelding.
“This horse has really been training well and he ran well today,” said Baze.
Baze said he knew he had to get Positive Response involved in the Rolling Green early since there was a lack of speed in the race.
“I asked Billy (Morey), ‘Would it be OK if I sent this horse a little?’” said Baze. “I didn’t want to put him on the lead but I sure didn’t want to get stuck behind horses. The way I figured it, we were going to go slow and everybody behind us was going to go slower. Once we got in position, I thought the race would be between just us and Hudson Landing.”
Positive Response, at 7-2, was the third betting choice in the field of six and paid $9.80. Tribal Tribute, the 2-1 second choice, took second by a head over 8-5 favorite Hudson Landing.
Positive Response earned $30,300 and has made $385,783 while amassing nine wins, four seconds and two thirds in 25 career races. Morey said Positive Response will likely make his next start in the $75,000 Bulldog Handicap at The Big Fresno Fair on Oct. 13.
After a dark day Tuesday, racing will resume at Golden Gate Fields Wednesday. Post time is 1:15 p.m.
