Our Nautique Scores Another Win On GGF Turf
Our Nautique was one of the favorites to win the $34,320 turf feature at Golden Gate Fields Friday but he became “lock-like” material hours before the race when fellow front-runner Goggles McCoy was scratched from the one-mile allowance test.
The defection of Goggles McCoy left Our Nautique as the lone speed in the race and the 6-year-old gelding took advantage of the situation to record another convincing wire-to-wire victory on the Lakeside Turf Course.
Our Nautique, who posted a 1 1/4-length victory in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on the Golden Gate Fields lawn on April 30, scored by 2 1/4 lengths Friday over old rival Bold Chieftain. Posse Power finished third after chasing Our Nautique to the stretch, and Honour the Deputy checked in last in the field of four.
Our Nautique, who has finished in front of Bold Chieftain in three of their four meetings this year, paid $4.00 as the even-money favorite in the wagering. Bold Chieftain, an 8-year-old horse who has earned more than $1.6 million, was the second choice at 7-to-5.
Jockey Kevin Krigger rode Our Nautique, who stopped the timer in 1:37.25. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who owns Our Nautique in partnership with Rob Tunnicliffe, saw his charge earn $19,800 for the victory. Bred in New Zealand, Our Nautique has nine wins, four seconds and four thirds in 28 career starts and $245,440 in earnings.
Krigger took off his remaining mounts following the feature (Race 3) due to a knee injury he sustained while working in his yard on a non-racing day. Riding Our Nautique aggravated the injury.
Krigger will have plenty to time to rehab the knee as he begins serving a pair of three-day riding suspensions Saturday. The penalties, given for causing interference in the stretch, will sideline Krigger this weekend as well as Sept. 23, 24, 25 and 30.
Post time Saturday at Golden Gate Fields is 12:45 p.m. and the track will host a gourmet food truck festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
