My Gal Candy Starts 2014 Campaign With Win
My Gal Candy, 0-for-3 in 2013, kicked off her 2014 racing campaign with a victory in the $24,105 sprint feature at Golden Gate Fields Friday.
Ridden by Russell Baze, who had scored with just three of his previous 39 mounts at the winter-spring meeting, My Gal Candy charged from fourth in a field of six to win the six-furlong race for fillies and mares by 1 1/4 lengths over 3-2 favorite Esperanza Latina.
Prima Gianna finished third.
My Gal Candy was the third choice in the wagering and paid $7.20 after recording her 13th victory in 29 career starts. A 7-year-old mare, My Gal Candy is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned in partnership by Hollendorfer, Brett Tahajian and George Todaro.
My Gal Candy collected $14,400 for Friday’s win and has banked $237,395 in her 29 trips to the starting gate.
Baze and Dennis Carr both had riding doubles. After tallying with My Gal Candy in the second race, Baze came right back to take the third race with I B Mike ($5.40). Carr won the fourth race with Top Tizzy ($7.40) and the seventh with Run Sophia Run ($4.20).
Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Saturday and Sunday. There are nine races both days and post time is 12:45 p.m. Sunday is Dollar Day with the track offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 beers, $1 hot dogs, and $1 sodas.
