Miss Machiavelli Favored In $100,000 Pike Place Dancer Stakes
Miss Machiavelli, who had an eventful trip while running third in the Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita, is the 9-5 morning line favorite in Saturday’s $100,000 Pike Place Dancer Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.
The Pike Place Dancer is a one-mile turf race for 2-year-old fillies. Miss Machiavelli will break from post position one and be ridden by Dennis Carr.
Victor Espinoza rode Miss Machiavelli in the Surfer Girl, a one-mile grass race in which the filly was bumped at the three-eighths pole and forced to steady at the quarter pole. Despite the trouble, Miss Machiavelli was only beaten 3 1/2 lengths by the winner of the race, 3-5 favorite Clenor. Clenor figures to be one of the favorites in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.
Miss Machiavelli went into the Surfer Girl off a game maiden victory at Del Mar. Battling tenaciously to the wire with horses on both sides of her, Miss Machiavelli won the one-mile maiden allowance race by a head.
Miss Machiavelli, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Artie Schiller, is trained by Keith Desormeaux and owned by Big Chief Racing LLC. Purchased as a yearling for $20,000, Miss Machiavelli has earned $48,500 in three starts and would bank $60,000 with a victory in the Pike Place Dancer.
The 5-2 second choice on the morning line is Pleasant Miss, who finished sixth in the Surfer Girl, 1 3/4 lengths behind Miss Machiavelli. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Pleasant Miss has finished in the money in three stakes events in Southern California.
The 7-2 third choice is Time and Tides, who made a winning debut at Golden Gate Fields in a six-furlong maiden allowance race. Trained by William E. Morey, Time and Tides will be making just her second career start in the Pike Place Dancer.
The Pike Place Dancer field, in post position order with riders and morning-line odds, is as follows: Miss Machiavelli, Carr rides, 9-5; Stunning Drama, Isaias Enriquez, 8-1; French Tart, Leslie Mawing, 12-1; Pleasant Miss, Juan Hernandez, 5-2; Time and Tides, Russell Baze, 7-2; Purims Faith, Alejandro Gomez, 6-1; and Alasharchy, Frank Alvarado, 12-1.
The Pike Place Dancer is the fourth race on a nine-race program and will be run at approximately 2:20 p.m. First post is 12:45 p.m.
