Krigger Has Riding Hat Trick At GGF; Bonde’s Twice The Appeal 10th In Derby

Jockey Kevin Krigger rode three winners Saturday at Golden Gate Fields to move into a tie for third place in the jockey standings.

Krigger captured the fifth race with Morton Owen ($29.20), the seventh with Lama Chant ($7.00) and the 10th with Roaring Rick ($12.80).  Krigger and Frank Alvarado share the third spot in the rider standings with 50 wins apiece at the 2010-2011 winter/spring meeting.

Russell Baze, who won the ninth race with Hexbreaker ($8.40), and Francisco Duran, who took the third race with Bailouttheminister ($28.60), are first and second in the jockey standings with 123 wins and 56 wins, respectively.
Twice the Appeal, trained by Jeff Bonde of Pleasanton, split the field in the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Twice the Appeal finished 10th in the field of 19 after being bet down to 11-1 from his morning-line odds of 20-1.  Twice the Appeal’s support at the mutuel windows was no doubt fueled by his jockey, Calvin Borel, who had won three of the past four Kentucky Derbies.

Two races prior to the Kentucky Derby, Bonde’s top sprinter Smiling Tiger finished sixth in the $348,900 Churchill Downs Stakes.  The 5-to-2 favorite, Smiling Tiger had no racing luck as he endured traffic problems throughout the stretch run.

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m. and the track is offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers and $1 sodas.  Golden Gate Fields’ Spring Concert Series gets started Sunday with Pride & Joy taking the Trackside Stage.
