King Kelly Posts Upset In Turf Feature

King Kelly rallied between horses in the stretch and got up to win the $43,820 turf feature by three-quarters of a length Sunday at Golden Gate Fields.

Receiving a fine ride from veteran jockey Isaias Enriquez, King Kelly edged Pepnic and jockey Alejandro Gomez for the victory while completing a mile on the Lakeside Turf Course in 1:37.36.  Dreamy Kid, ridden by Juan Hernandez, finished third, a neck behind Pepnic.

King Kelly, a 7-year-old horse trained by Monty Meier, had finished fourth in his previous two starts and went off at odds of 7-1.  King Kelly paid $16.20 after earning his fourth victory in 22 career starts and his first win on turf in six tries.

Owned and bred by the Frankfurt Stable of Lewis Figone, King Kelly collected $27,300 for win.  A California-bred son of Marino Marini, King Kelly has banked $169,224 in his 22 trips to the starting gate.

Jockey Russell Baze rode four winners Sunday.  Baze won the second race with Jumanah ($8.00), the fourth with Mark a Star ($5.20), the sixth with Butterfly Soul ($8.60) and the ninth with Black Mischief ($14.00).
