Justenufappeal Wins Golden Poppy

Justenufappeal Wins Golden Poppy

Justenufappear rewarded her throng of backers at Golden Gate Fields Saturday by rallying down the stretch for a 1 3/4-length victory in the $75,000 Golden Poppy Stakes.

Listed at 6-to-1 on the morning line, Justenufappeal was bet down to 8-to-5 favoritism
in the 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies.  Justenufappeal proved the handicappers right when she took command from Alec’s Moon and Seismic Speed in midstretch and then held off late-running Windy Sails.

Justenufappeal proved to be a handful early for jockey Russell Baze, who allowed his filly to take the lead.

“She doesn’t want you to mess with her,” said Baze.  “She gets mad, so you have to let her run.  I was hoping she’d relax a little bit better than that but it didn’t matter.”

Justenufappeal surrendered the lead on the backstretch to an aggressive Alec’s Moon.
Seismic Speed and Unbridled Joule also surged past Justenufappeal.

“As soon as Alec’s Moon passed her on the backstretch she started to relax some,” said Baze.  “I was surprised when those horses went by me on the backstretch but I wasn’t concerned because I thought they were moving a little too soon on this turf course.”

Justenufappeal raced along the rail until Baze swung her out for racing room at the top of the stretch.  Once in the clear, Justenufappeal took aim at the leaders and reeled them in impressively.
“I was pleasantly surprised by how well my filly finished considering the effort she had put out early,” said Baze.  “She’s just all heart and has a lot of talent.”

Justenufappeal won the Golden Poppy in 1:46.06 and paid $5.40.  Windy Sails took second by 1 1/4 lengths over Alec’s Moon.  Our Curious Kitten, Seismic Speed and Unbridled Joule completed the order of finish.

Justenufappeal, trained by Steve Specht, has three wins, two seconds and a third in six career starts.  Owned in partnership by Praz Racing Stable, Eddie Delahoussaye and Michael Dye, Justenufappeal earned $45,000 for the Golden Poppy victory.

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m. and the track is offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers and $1 sodas.
