Jockeys Order Up A Round Of Doubles At Golden Gate Fields

The theme of the afternoon at Golden Gate Fields Saturday was riding doubles as four jockeys made repeat visits to the winner’s circle.

Julien Couton, Leslie Mawing, David Lopez and Hector Romero all rode a pair of winners on the nine-race program.  Mawing and Lopez earned style points for posting their victories in back-to-back races.

Couton won the first race with So Behold ($12.80) and the featured eighth race, a $34,804 allowance race for 4-year-olds and up, with Highway Bandit ($6.60), who got up in the final strides to defeat 11-to-1 longshot Marine Fog by a head.

Mawing took the second and third events on the card with I’m a Flyer Too ($3.80) and My Golly ($9.60), respectively.  Lopez won the fifth race aboard 12-to-1 outsider Rom Baba ($26.80) and the sixth race with even-money favorite Body Builder ($4.00).

Romero, like Lopez, scored with an even-money choice and a price horse as he captured the fourth race with Big Son of a Gun ($4.00) and the seventh with 8-to-1 Formula Gold ($19.20).

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m. and the track is offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 beers, $1 hot dogs and $1 sodas.   Called “the Bay Area’s biggest sports bar” on Sundays, Golden Gate Fields will show the NFL conference championship games on television monitors throughout its facility.
