Hurricane Lake Prevails In Blanket Finish

Hurricane Lake Prevails In Blanket Finish

Hurricane Lake, receiving a strong ride from veteran jockey Frank Alvarado, rallied between front-runners Atomic Rule and Welcome Home Ryan in the final sixteenth of a mile and got up to win the $31,470 feature race in a photo finish Friday at Golden Gate Fields.

The 1 1/16-mile allowance test for 3-year-olds and up featured a blanket finish as the first five finishers were separated by less than two lengths.  Hurricane Lake hit the wire a neck in front of Welcome Home Ryan, who took second by a head over Atomic Rule.

Atomic Rule finished a half-length in front of Catatonic Cat, who took fourth by the same margin over 7-5 favorite Noble Kent.

Hurricane Lake, a 6-year-old gelding, was making his first start since being claimed for $20,000 by trainer Jeff Bonde on Feb. 9 at Santa Anita.  Hurricane Lake earned $18,000 for Bonde’s clients – the ownership group of Allen Aldrich, Karen Isbell and Michael Rovner.

Hurricane Lake was timed in 1:46.04 and paid $6.80 as the 2-1 second choice in a field of seven.  The win was seventh in 43 career starts for Hurricane Lake, who has finished in the money in 26 of his races and earned $292,881.

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Saturday and Sunday.  Post time both days is 12:45 p.m.
