Hudson Landing 2-1 Favorite In Rolling Green Stakes
Hudson Landing, a winner of three stakes in 2012, is favored to collect his first stakes win of 2013 in the $50,000 Rolling Green Stakes at Golden Gate Fields Monday.
The Rolling Green, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-olds and up, is the main event on a special Labor Day racing card. Post time is 1:15 p.m. and fans attending the nine-race holiday program will enjoy great bargains – $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 hot dogs, $1 beers and $1 sodas.
The Rolling Green is the fourth race and will be run at approximately 2:45 p.m. The feature attracted a field of six and Hudson Landing will break from the rail under jockey Juan Hernandez.
Trained by Blaine Wright, Hudson Landing won the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile and Grade 3 All American Stakes at Golden Gate Fields last year as well as the Mt. Rainier Handicap at Emerald Downs.
Hudson Landing is winless in five starts this year, however, he did finish second (beaten less than a length) in the 2013 All American. The 6-year-old gelding enters the Rolling Green with $507,898 in earnings – easily the top bankroll in the field – and is the 2-1 favorite on the morning line.
Hudson Landing is one of four stakes-winners in the Rolling Green. The others are Polytechnicien, Positive Response, and Tribal Tribute.
Polytechnicien won a Group 3 stakes in France in 2011 and will be returning from a one-year layoff in the Rolling Green. First or second in 10 of his 19 career races, Polytechnicien has been training well at Del Mar for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella.
Positive Response, the hero of the 2011 California Derby, has won four stakes and $355,483. Trained by William E. Morey, Positive Response scored his most recent victory in the County of Alameda Handicap at Pleasanton on June 29. Hall of Famer Russell Baze will ride the 5-year-old gelding in the Rolling Green.
Tribal Tribute, trained by Tim McCanna, won the Robert Dupret Derby at Santa Rosa last year and is 1-for-2 on the Golden Gate Fields turf course. Tribal Tribute finished third in the County of Alameda Handicap, beaten 2 1/2 lengths by Positive Response.
The Rolling Green lineup is completed by Eagle Screams, winner of an allowance race on the turf at Santa Rosa on Aug. 7, and Siberian Laughter, who finished fifth in the County of Alameda Handicap.
The field for the Rolling Green, in post position order with riders and morning-line odds, is as follows: Hudson Landing, Hernandez, 2-1; Polytechnicien, Dennis Carr, 4-1; Positive Response, Baze, 5-2; Tribal Tribute, Frank Alvarado, 3-1; Eagle Screams, Inoel Beato, 12-1; and Siberian Laughter, Leslie Mawing, 8-1.
