The Horses Are Back On Grass At Golden Gate Fields Saturday

The first turf races of the 2010-2011 Golden Gate Fields meeting will be contested Saturday at the East Bay racetrack.  Post time for the nine-race card is 12:45 p.m.

The fourth, sixth and eighth races will be decided on the Lakeside Turf Course and the three grass events have an average field size of nine runners.

Nine fillies and mares will match strides in the fourth race, a one-mile starter allowance contest.  My Golly, a 5-year-old mare who has three seconds in six tries on the Golden Gate Fields turf, is the 5-to-2 favorite on the morning line.  Jockey David Lopez will ride My Golly for trainer Holly Evans.

Eleven 3-year-olds are signed up for the sixth race but only 10 can start in the one-mile starter allowance test, which leaves Mazarron on the also eligible list.  The 7-to-5 morning line favorite is Duke of Doom, who will make his West Coast debut after posting a win and two seconds in three turf tries in Florida.   Russell Baze will ride the William E. Morey-trained Duke of Doom.

The featured eighth race is one-mile allowance event for older horses that attracted a strong cast of eight.  Seven of the horses in the field are stakes-winners and three are graded stakes-winners – Meteore (victor of the Grade 2 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar in 2009), Rendezvous (Grade 2 Del Mar Derby, Del Mar, 2009), and Awesome Gem (Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup, Hollywood Park, 2010).

Meteore, a 5-year-old horse trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, is the 9-to-5
morning line favorite.  Meteore ran a pair of big races on the turf last year as he finished
second in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile Handicap and third in the Grade 2 Citation Handicap
at Hollywood Park.  Meteore will be ridden for the first time Saturday by Southern
California-based jockey Brice Blanc.

In post position order, the field for Saturday’s main event is as follows: Sir Al, Julien Couton rides, 12-to-1; Hudson Landing, Frank Alvarado, 3-to-1; Meteore, Blanc, 9-to-5; Rendezvous, Aaron Gryder, 6-to-1; Cayambe, William Antongeorgi, III, 8-to-1; Awesome Gem, Russell Baze, 7-to-2; Posse Power, Leslie Mawing, 20-to-1; and Dream Nettie, Kevin Krigger, 15-to-1.  All of the starters will carry 118 pounds.
