Hollywood Gold Cup Champion Awesome Gem Runs Saturday At GGF

Awesome Gem, winner of the Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup last year, will race at Golden Gate Fields Saturday in a salty allowance race for older horses.

Awesome Gem is an 8-year-old gelding who has earned $2,279,682 in 39 career starts. Trained by Craig Dollase, Awesome Gem collected his first Grade 1 stakes victory last summer when he defeated Rail Trip by a half-length in the Hollywood Gold Cup.

Awesome Gem, a winner of three graded stakes, will face seven rivals Saturday in a one-mile contest on Golden Gate Fields’ Lakeside Turf Course.   Every horse in the field, with the exception of Sir Al, owns a stakes victory and three of the entrants are graded stakes-winners – Awesome Gem, Meteore, and Rendezvous.

Meteore captured the Grade 2 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 15, 2009, but is winless in 10 subsequent starts.  Rendezvous won the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby on Sept. 6, 2009, but has failed to reach the winner’s circle in his 11 races since that triumph.

The other stakes-winners in the field are Hudson Landing (victor of the 2010 Alcatraz at Golden Gate Fields), Cayambe (2010 Ralph M. Hinds Handicap at Fairplex Park), Posse Power (2010 Auburn Stakes at Emerald Downs), and Dream Nettie (2010 La Puente Stakes at Santa Anita).

The field for Saturday’s main event, the eighth race on a nine-race program, is as follows: Sir Al, Julien Couton rides; Hudson Landing, Frank Alvarado; Meteore, Brice Blanc; Rendezvous, Aaron Gryder; Cayambe, William Antongeorgi, III; Awesome Gem, Russell Baze; Posse Power, Leslie Mawing; and Dream Nettie, Kevin Krigger.  All of the starters will carry 118 pounds.

Post time Saturday is 12:45 p.m.
