Hollendorfer Wins California Cup Race With 2-Year-Old Colt Rousing Sermon

Jerry Hollendorfer, the Northern California-based Hall of Fame trainer, won the $100,000 Bob Benoit California Cup Juvenile Stakes at Santa Anita Saturday with Rousing Sermon.

Rousing Sermon charged from sixth in a field of nine to win the 1 1/16-mile race for
2-year-olds by 2 1/4 lengths over Motown Man.  Rousing Sermon was making his race around two turns after running five furlongs, 5 1/2 furlongs, and six furlongs in his first three starts.

“I didn’t think it (stretching out in distance) would be a problem,” said Hollendorfer.  “The horse has been training sensational.”

Rousing Sermon, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, paid $9.20 after stopping the timer in 1:43.52.  A chestnut colt by Lucky Pulpit, Rousing Sermon is owned by his breeders, Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams.  Rousing Sermon earned $60,000 for the victory, his second in four career starts.

Hollendorfer was the only Bay Area-based trainer to score a victory on the Cal Cup program.
