Hollendorfer Stuck At 5,998 Career Wins

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer finished the racing week the same way he began it – with 5,998 career victories.

Hollendorfer failed to reach the winner’s circle with his five starters at Golden Gate Fields Sunday and also missed with his lone entrant at Del Mar.  The 0-for-6 afternoon capped a 0-for-23 week for the Hall of Famer.

Victory droughts are very rare for Hollendorfer, who frequently wins multiple races on a single racing program.  Hollendorfer has won five races on a single card – the Northern California record for most wins by a trainer on a program – three times.

Hollendorfer, who scored win No. 5,998 with Indian Gracey in the ninth race at Golden Gate Fields on Aug. 21, will continue his pursuit of milestone victory No. 6,000 Wednesday at Del Mar when he starts Tales in Excess in the sixth race and Roar Baby Roar and Lookin for Jonesy in the featured seventh race, the $100,000 Generous Portion Stakes.

Only three trainers in thoroughbred racing history have reached the 6,000-win
mark – the late Dale Baird (9,445 career victories) and active trainers Jack Van Berg (6,406) and King T. Leatherbury (6,324).

Jockey Herrera Injured  --  Jockey Cristobal Herrera, who had a riding double Saturday, fractured his left clavicle in a spill during morning workouts Sunday and will be sidelined four to six weeks, according to Golden Gate Fields track physician Dr. David Seftel.

Herrera went down when Winnfireandfaith, a 4-year-old maiden filly, fractured her right front cannon bone while galloping out after a half-mile move in :49 flat.  Winnfireandfaith had to be euthanized.

Herrera scored Saturday with Madoffwiththemoney ($13.80) in the eighth race and Party At My Place ($14.20) in the 10th.  Herrera had been off to a very good start at the summer meeting, amassing four wins and a second from 10 mounts.
