Hollendorfer Runner Pays $87.00 To Win
Jerry Hollendorfer is a member of thoroughbred racing’s Hall of Fame and has won 39 training championships at Golden Gate Fields, so it’s only natural that his horses are always well-backed at the betting windows at the East Bay racetrack. Well, almost always.
In a true racing rarity at Golden Gate Fields, a Hollendorfer-trained runner paid $87.00 to win Saturday. That horse would be Cody Peak, a 4-year-old colt who won a head-bobbing photo finish over Bailouttheminister in the eighth race.
Ridden by Julien Couton, 42-to-1 shot Cody Peak scored by the slimmest of noses over 3-to-1 Bailouttheminister, who was ridden by Hollendorfer’s longtime go-to jockey, Hall of Famer Russell Baze. Cody Peak stopped the timer in 1:38.11 and paid $87.00, $28.40 and $9.20 across the board after recording his third victory in 16 career starts.
Cody Peak was one of three winners saddled by Hollendorfer, who teamed with Baze to capture the fifth race with Big Girl ($3.60) and the ninth race with My Gal Candy ($4.80).
Baze had a riding four-bagger as he also won the second race with Trappers Magic ($4.00) and the fourth race with Distinctive Yolie ($6.20).
Jockey Catalino Martinez had a riding double. The hustling rider took the first race with Nip of Gold ($19.60) and the sixth with A Kings Life ($2.80).
Golden Gate Fields will host a Year of the Dragon Dollar Day card Sunday that offers fans $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 beers, $1 hot dogs, $1 sodas, a Lion Dance competition, and Chinese entertainment. Post time is 12:45 p.m. and all fans attending the races will receive a free lucky red envelope containing a cash voucher worth at least $2 and as much as $500.
