Hollendorfer To Run Longview Drive In $1 Million Delta Downs Jackpot

Hollendorfer To Run Longview Drive In $1 Million Delta Downs Jackpot

Northern California trainer Jerry Hollendorfer will start his promising colt Longview Drive in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot Saturday at Delta Downs in Vinton, Louisiana.

One of the richest races in North America for 2-year-olds, the Grade 3 Jackpot is a
1 1/16-mile event contested on a six-furlong oval at a track located in southwestern Louisiana.  A field of 10 was entered in the Jackpot and Longview Drive drew post position one.

Longview Drive has good speed and the son of Pulpit will have to use it coming out of the one hole.  Ridden by Russell Baze in all four of his career starts, Longview Drive will have the services of top Southern California-based jockey Joel Rosario in the Jackpot.

Longview Drive finished second in his career debut at Golden Gate Fields last June and then rattled off three straight victories on the summer fair circuit.  He broke his maiden in a five-furlong dash at Pleasanton and then captured the six-furlong Cavonnier Juvenile at Santa Rosa.  In his most recent start, Longview Drive successfully stretched out in distance to win the 1 1/16-mile Charlie Palmer Futurity at the Big Fresno Fair.

Longview Drive, owned by Steve Beneto of Sacramento, was purchased at the 2010 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $175,000 and has made $98,000 in his four races.  Longview Drive, 10-to-1 on the Jackpot morning line, will make his purchase price look like a steal if he can pull off the upset Saturday.

The 2-to-1 morning line favorite in the Jackpot is the Bob Baffert-trained Drill, winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and runner-up in the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita.  Drill will be racing just two weeks after finishing a disappointing 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs.

The 10 Jackpot entrants, listed in post position order with morning-line odds, are: Longview Drive (10-to-1), Seven Lively Sins (9-to-2), Tiz Moe (15-to-1), Basmati       (8-to-1), My Adonis (4-to-1), Drill (2-to-1), Laurie’s Rocket (10-to-1), Sabercat (8-to-1), Dougs Buddy (20-to-1), and Jake Mo (15-to-1).

Hollendorfer will start two horses at Delta Downs Saturday.  Prior to saddling Longview Drive in the seventh race, he’ll send out Spirit Seeker in the third race, the $125,000 Treasure Chest Stakes.  A 5-year-old mare, Spirit Seeker has won three straight races and will be ridden by Rosario in the one-mile test for distaffers.

Canned Food Drive Saturday  --  Golden Gate Fields will hold a canned food drive Saturday for the Bear Pantry at the University of California.  The Bear Pantry helps student families with dependent children.  Fans will receive one club house pass for each canned food item donated, with a limit of 10 club house passes per person.
