Hollendorfer, Baze Have Monster Days

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and jockey Russell Baze, the two leading men in Bay Area horse racing, both had themselves quite a Wednesday afternoon.

Hollendorfer went 4-for-5 at Golden Gate Fields and 3-for-3 at Portland Meadows, where he captured the Dennis Dodge Memorial Stakes with El Gaucho.  Hollendorfer’s other wins at Portland came with Decatur Island ($3.60) in the first race and Karakot ($3.00) in the fifth race.

Hollendorfer teamed with Baze, who went 4-for-7 at Golden Gate Fields, to sweep the first three races on the card.  The duo took the first race with Sachariste ($2.80), the second with Sky Brite Miss  ($2.80), and the third with Bimbo Magic ($3.80).

Hollendorfer also won the fifth race with Seismic Speed ($5.60) but had his perfect game broken up in the seventh race when his 3-year-old colt Nepobedimiy ran third.  The winner of the seventh race was Kingman Kid ($6.40), who completed the four-bagger for Baze.

Hollendorfer tops the trainer standings at both Portland Meadows and Golden Gate Fields with an identical win total of 25 at both tracks.  Baze is the leading jockey at Golden Gate Fields with 35 wins.

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Thursday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
