Hidinginplainsight Runs Away And Hides In Camilla Urso
Hidinginplainsight, with substitute jockey William Antongeorgi III in the saddle, posted a front-running victory in the $51,650 Camilla Urso Stakes at Golden Gate Fields Saturday.
Antongeorgi picked up the mount on Hidinginplainsight when the filly’s scheduled rider, Southern California-based Aaron Gryder, couldn’t make it to Golden Gate Fields due to travel issues.
Antongeorgi had no issues with Hidinginplainsight, who took command at the start and was never challenged en route to winning the six-furlong feature for fillies and mares by two lengths in 1:10.17. Hidinginplainsight paid $10.00 as the third wagering choice in a field of eight.
Distinctive Yolie, ridden by Russell Baze, took second by 1 1/4 lengths over Cathy’s Crunches and jockey Julien Couton. English Royal, the 8-5 favorite, finished sixth.
“I’ll take pick-up mounts like this all day long,” said Antongeorgi, who was surprised that Hidinginplainsight was able to take the lead without a fight. “I thought there would be more pressure. I figured they’re going to gun, but being down in the one hole (post position one) I was going to gun harder.
“She’s quick out of there,” continued Antongeorgi. “As soon as I got the length or two clear in front, I thought she’d be tough. I was able to get her settled on the backside when no one really pressured me and she kicked on for home. We got the jump on them and it worked out.”
Hidinginplainsight is based at Santa Anita, trained by Mike Puype, and owned in partnership by Blinkers On Racing Stable, Wayne Barker, and Robert Butler. Hidinginplainsight went into the Camilla Urso with just one win from nine starts but she also had five runner-up finishes and a third-place effort.
“She shows up every time,” said Scott Sherwood, manager of Blinkers On Racing Stable. “Some of the other speed horses didn’t come out running, so we were very happy. She’s had some tough luck and lost to some good horses. We felt she fit class-wise in this race.”
Hidinginplainsight, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Elusive Quality, was purchased as a 2-year-old for $80,000 at the May 2011 Timonium Sale. Hidinginplainsight earned $30,450 for the Camilla Urso victory and has banked $131,750 in her 10 races.
Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Sunday. Post time is 12:45 p.m. and the track is offering $1 general parking, $1 general admission, $1 programs, $1 beers, $1 hot dogs, and $1 sodas.
