Henderson, Flores Team Up For Win With 33-1 Astuzia

Trainer Frances Henderson, who saddled two winners in 2013, and jockey Pablo Flores, who rode five winners last year, teamed up to win the fourth race at Golden Gate Fields Thursday with 33-1 outsider Astuzia.

Astuzia, winless in 16 starts in 2013 and 0-for-2 this year, broke out of her slump when she rallied from last in a field of five to win a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares by a half-length over Handfull and jockey Russell Baze.

Astuzia paid $69.40 after reaching the winner’s circle for the first time since Dec. 31, 2012.  A 6-year-old mare owned by Dr. Paul Kypros and Jonathan Baker, Astuzia has four victories in 36 career starts.

Racing continues Friday at Golden Gate Fields and for those that believe lightning can strike twice, Henderson and Flores will partner with perennial maiden Rising Above in the second race.  Rising Above is an 8-year-old mare who has failed to reach the winner’s circle in 78 starts.  Rising Above is 20-1 on the morning line.

First post Friday is 12:45 p.m. and post time for the second race is 1:15 p.m.
