Heavy Favorite G. G. Ryder Too Tough In Feature
G. G. Ryder, the 2-5 favorite ridden by Russell Baze, proved too tough in the $35,505 allowance feature at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.
G. G. Ryder seized the lead from pacesetter Candy Passion at the top of the stretch and then held off Terrys Tom Cat through the final furlong to win the one-mile test for
3-year-olds by 1 1/4 lengths. Charlie Thomas finished third.
G. G. Ryder, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, clocked a time of 1:38.34 and paid $2.80 after collecting his third victory in six career starts. A California-bred colt by Chhaya Dance, G. G. Ryder has finished in the money in all but one of his races.
Owned in partnership by Hollendorfer and George Todaro, G. G. Ryder earned $23,400 for the victory.
G. G. Ryder was the second winner on the card for Baze, who took the fifth race with Nava Nataly ($5.20).
Ricardo Gonzalez, riding with the five-pound apprentice allowance for the final time, also won a pair of races. Gonzalez captured the first race with Dark Ocean ($5.40) and the third race with Power of Ten ($14.00).
Racing will resume at Golden Gate Fields Thursday. Post time is 12:45 p.m.
