Gutshot Straight Wins Sprint Feature In Debut For Moger

Gutshot Straight, making his first start for trainer Ed Moger, Jr., rallied from sixth in a field of seven to capture the $23,210 sprint feature at Golden Gate Fields Friday.

Claimed by Moger for $22,500 on Nov. 21 at Betfair Hollywood Park, Gutshot Straight earned back $13,800 of his purchase price by getting up to win the six-furlong race by a head over 4-5 favorite Tiz Point.  Sourdough Sam, a two-time stakes winner, finished third.

Gutshot Straight was ridden by Alejandro Gomez and paid $14.40 after being dismissed at 6-1 odds.  The 5-year-old gelding was timed in 1:11.06.

The victory was the ninth in 29 career starts for the popular Gutshot Straight, who was claimed six times in 2013.  Gutshot Straight had been claimed out of his previous four races but there weren’t any buyers Friday when he was in for a tag of $25,000.

Fans attending Golden Gate Fields Saturday will receive a free 2014 wall calendar that features photographs of racing action at the East Bay track.  Gates open at 10 a.m. and post time for the nine-race program is 12:45 p.m.
