Gryder Wins Summer Riding Title; Sherman Takes Training Crown
Jockey Aaron Gryder, a well-traveled veteran who has won riding titles at Aqueduct (New York), Churchill Downs (Kentucky), Arlington Park (Illinois) and Hollywood Park (Southern California), earned his first Golden Gate Fields riding championship by posting 29 victories at the 22-day summer meeting that concluded Sunday.
Juan Hernandez took second in the jockey standings with 24 wins. Perennial champion Russell Baze, who missed seven days at the short meeting due to out-of-town riding engagements and a three-day suspension, finished third with 20 victories.
Baze, the leading rider of the past 12 Golden Gate Fields meetings, owns 40 career riding crowns at the East Bay racetrack.
Steve Sherman won the summer meeting training championship for the second consecutive year by saddling 18 winners. Sherman, who edged William E. Morey 22-21 at the 2010 summer stand, won another photo finish at the 2011 meeting as he defeated Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer 18-17 for leading honors.
Hollendorfer didn’t go down without a fight Sunday as he won the third and fourth races with Worldly Lad ($5.00) and Western Roses ($4.60), respectively, to tie Sherman at 17-17. Sherman took back sole possession of first place in the eighth race when his 11-to-1 outsider Green Cat sprang a $24.60 upset.
The star of the closing-day program was jockey Inoel Beato, who rode three winners. Beato, who also had a riding hat trick Friday, scored Sunday with Famous Boots ($9.00) in the first race, Worldly Lad in the third, and Dunmore East ($15.80) in the ninth.
Live racing at Golden Gate Fields will resume on Thursday, Oct. 20, when the track kicks off its 2011 fall meeting. The 36-day fall season will run through Sunday, Dec. 18, and feature racing on a Thursday-through-Sunday schedule. Post time will be 12:45 p.m.
Golden Gate Fields will be open for simulcast wagering the following days: Oct. 5-10, 13-16, and 19. The simulcast wagering menu will feature action from Belmont Park, Santa Anita and The Big Fresno Fair. For the complete simulcast schedule, fans should visit www.goldengatefields.com.
