Gryder-Martin Combo Click Again At Golden Gate Fields

The jockey-trainer combination of Aaron Gryder and John F. Martin clicked again Thursday at Golden Gate Fields when the 5-year-old gelding Gavel dropped a
3 1/4-length victory on his four rivals in the fifth race.

The team of Gryder and Martin has been nearly unbeatable at Golden Gate Fields as the duo is 8-for-9 with a second at the 2010-2011 meeting.  If not for a nostril, Gryder and Martin would be 9-for-9 together but they and Our Man Luke lost an incredibly tight photo finish to Hunter Creek in the eighth race on April 3.

Gavel supplied Gryder and Martin with four of their joint victories.  The gelding is no longer in Martin’s barn, however, as leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer claimed Gavel out of Thursday’s race for $6,250.

Martin claimed Gavel for $4,000 on Jan. 17 and then watched the Washington-bred win four straight races while racing for claiming tags of $4,000, $5,000, and $6,250 (twice).  Gavel earned $22,775 in his four starts for Martin, who owned the horse and therefore received another $6,250 from Hollendorfer’s claim.

Gavel was the second choice in the wagering Thursday and paid $5.20 after completing 1 1/16-miles in 1:45.46.

Racing continues at Golden Gate Fields Friday.  Post time is 12:45 p.m.
